Washington D.C., is one of the most iconic places to celebrate the Fourth of July. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and patriotic atmosphere, the nation’s capital offers a variety of activities that make Independence Day truly special. Living just outside the District, we end up finding some time to visit almost every year. The past couple of years we’ve been fortunate enough to participate in a roof-top party near the National Mall that enjoys an incredible view of the fireworks and this year will be more of the same. But, over the years, we’ve collected some of the coolest things to do into a list we like to call “Patriotic Perfection”. Hope you enjoy!

4. A Capitol Fourth Concert

Experience a truly memorable evening with “A Capitol Fourth,” a free concert held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. This annual event features performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, as well as popular artists and Broadway stars. The concert culminates with a spectacular fireworks display over the National Mall. Arrive early to find a good spot, bring a blanket, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. If you happen to be in town on the 3rd, you can catch the dress rehearsal with usually smaller crowds between 8-10PM on the Capitol grounds. Find out more about the actual show.
5. Fireworks on the National Mall

The highlight of Washington, DC’s Fourth of July celebrations is the breathtaking fireworks display on the National Mall. The show starts at 9:09 PM and lasts for about 17 minutes. The best viewing spots include the National Mall, the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and the areas around the Washington Monument. Alternatively, head to rooftop bars or high vantage points like the Kennedy Center’s terrace for a unique perspective.
6. Boat Tours on the Potomac River
For a different perspective on the festivities, consider taking a boat tour on the Potomac River.
