Explore the amazing Hidden Gems of Paris

To get a real local feel for it all, you really owe it to yourself to investigate the different neighborhoods (“arrondissements” as Parisians call them) and areas off the most beaten paths. In this blog post, we will uncover the best hidden gems that every visitor should add to their Parisian itinerary and give you the intel on how to discover them and get the most from the experience.

1. Montmartre

Nestled in the heart of Paris within the 18th arrondissement, Montmartre is a charming neighborhood that exudes bohemian allure. Take a leisurely stroll through its narrow cobblestone streets and explore the hidden gems like the iconic Sacre-Coeur Basilica. Grab a bite to eat or a drink in one of the cafes or bakeries (boulangeries). From the top of Montmartre’s hill, you can marvel at the breathtaking panoramic views of the city below. Consider this: The Basilica is very busy in the evening approaching sunset because of its incredible western views of the city below. Best times to visit with less crowds are usually in the morning and on a weekday. You should also consider a tour of the area to really get the best experience.

To get there: Best to take the metro (lines 2 or 12) to Abbesses station, a short walk from the metro will lead you to steps up to the Basilica (and an awesome view from it’s overlook), but for a less strenuous trek up, take the funicular located next to the stairs – it’s the cost of a metro ride. Selfie Tip: As you walk up out of the Abbesses metro, the Le Mur des Je t’aime (Wall of Love) mural is right in front of you. It’s a great spot to get a romantic Instagram shot!

2. Canal Saint-Martin

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and venture into the tranquility of Canal Saint-Martin, (one of Paris’ probably least hidden gems). This picturesque canal, lined with trees and charming footbridges, offers a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. Grab a picnic blanket, some freshly baked pastries, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon by the water. Be sure to also explore the trendy boutiques and quirky shops that can be found nearby.

The canal is a 4.6 km extension from the Seine that was originally used for supplying the city with fresh water. Today, it’s vibrant art scene, excellent restaurants and serenity offer a slice of what the French like to call “La Vie Paris.”

Stroll along the instagrammable “Quai de Valmy”, shop in the trendy boutiques, or simply relax and enjoy the barges passing by in the locks of the canal. 3. Sainte-Chapelle

Sainte-Chapelle is a hidden gem tucked away on the Ile de la Cité. This Gothic masterpiece is often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Notre-Dame Cathedral, but it is undeniably worth a visit. As you step inside, you will be immediately mesmerized by the stunning stained glass windows that cover the chapel’s walls. While you are in the neighborhood, right next door to the chapel is a UNESCO world heritage site “Conciergerie,” the remains of the “Palais de la Cite” (the residence and seat of power of the Kings of France during the Middle Ages), which became the prison of parliament during the 14th century. 4. Jardin du Luxembourg

While a cemetery may not be one’s typical destination, Pere-Lachaise Cemetery is an exception that should not be missed. Over 3.5 million people visit this necropolis annually! This enchanting cemetery is the final resting place of many notable figures, including Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, and Edith Piaf. Take a peaceful stroll through the tomb-lined paths, admire the beautiful sculptures, and discover the stories of those who have left their mark on history.
